Manny the woolly mammoth (voice of Ray Romano), Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo), Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Denis Leary), and the hapless prehistoric squirrel/rat known as Scrat (Chris Wedge) are back in this sequel to the popular 2002 film. Manny is ready to start a family, but nobody has seen another mammoth for a long time. In fact, Manny thinks he may be the last one. That is until he miraculously finds Ellie (Queen Latifah), the only female mammoth left in the world. The only problem being that they can't stand each other. Ellie comes with some excess baggage in the form of her two possum friends Crash (Seann William Scott) and Eddie (Josh Peck), a couple of daredevil pranksters and cocky, loud-mouthed troublemakers. When a huge glacial dam holding off oceans of water is about to break, threatening the entire valley, the only chance of survival lies at the other end of the valley. So our three heroes, along with Ellie, Crash and Eddie, form the most unlikely family as they embark on a mission across an ever-changing, increasingly dangerous landscape.

hey kids, go hug a tree
The clues in the title - it's about the ice shelves melting and therefore addresses a current concern over our environment without being too preachy about it and having some fun and japes along the way. Scrat as ever is excellent and by far the best twitchy hyper CG animal in any of this type of film. All the 'acting' is great i.e. the voice talent and also the way this is fed back into the animation of the faces and mannerisms. There has also been a vast improvement over the rendering of the characters and environments over the original - as you would expect technology has moved on and things like fur and water look a lot better in this film - although I have to say Happy Feet still gets the medal for best graphics. If you liked Happy Feet you will like this, but I recommend you watch the original one first as you need to have a knowledge of the mammoth's 'back story' prior to this or you may not get into the whole wanting a family thing that he has going on in his big hairy head.

Beautiful - almost as good as the first
Wonderful for the young and young at heart, and like the first film, also contains some quite deep messages about family and our changing planet. On a personal level though, as a prospective adoptive parent, I can see the 'Mammoth taken in by Possums' aspect to this film providing a simple but very sweet way to explain to a new family member how they came to be here. And once again, the odd but loving little herd of central characters demonstrate how the families we make can be just as special as the families we're born to.And on a less heavy level, the whole film is great fun!

A modern classic for children of any age
A great UMD which will keep my 10 year old son occupied on an 8 hour flight (that has rubbish-y in-flight entertainment) so an absolute life saver for me.The film itself is a modern classic that is a hit with children of all ages (it makes my fiance giggle), a little bit of "threat/danger" but nothing too intense I would say. The animation is amazing, and the underlying theme of love, friendship, courage and persistance are enough to melt any heart!
