Q: Crabgrass?....What and when do I apply to kill / get rid of crabgrass....

Lots of terrible and overcomplicated answers above, ignore those. The FACT is that crabgrass seeds begin to germinate when the soil temp hits 55 degree for a few days straight. Apply it right before that and it will work fine, products like these do NOT prevent it all year, you MUST make dual applications to control weeds all year. Buy a cheap meat thermometer and put it 2-4" into the soil and let it sit for 5 minutes, this is the easiest way to know exactly what your soil temps are.

Q: Would Scotts crabgrass killer , kill my vegetables too?

This is a pre-emergent, so it should not kill anything that has already emerged. But I personally wouldn't recommend spreading a chemical like this in a garden.

Q: do you need a spreader?

Yes, you need some sort of spreader so you can be sure the product is applied evenly. I have one of those hand-held Whirlybird spreaders. HomeDepot and Lowe's have them.

Q: This seems a good deal but the weight is stated at 10lbs and the bags at stores have 15lbs.....maybe not so good??

This is a good deal. I bought 8 bags for my lawn, and I'm waiting for it to arrive. Lowes and Home Depot don't have it in store or online. I applied Scotts Turf Builder to kill dandelions a few weeks ago. I called Scotts to ask them which product I could use to now prevent crabgrass before it starts? They said since the dandelion turf builder includes Lawn Food, I needed one now that does not include lawn good. So they recommended this one, and said I could apply it one week after the turf builder dandelion with lawn food. I'm hoping it will work out well. The past few years I did nothing and was lazy to fertilize and my grass was full of weeds! Hope this helps.
