Good beginner information
This book is a good beginner to intermediate level book for those interested in winter camping/hiking. It is written in an everyday language and contains some good basic information. The author has compiled information on how to have fun in the winter (snow) into one centralized location. The best part about this book is the suggestions concerning planning and organization. I did not like, the long-winded build-up before actually teaching anything. The author also beat home the most basic of information again, and again (yawn). One thing that I did not agree with, and was turned off by, was the suggestion to pack out your own human waste, HUH? Once the author actually started sharing information, it was good, basic, useful information. If you do not feel like searching through the forums on the Internet and you are new to camping in snow, then this book is for you.

Great Resource
This is a great read. I really like some of the stories that go a long with the advice. Do this because once we tried it and this appended... I think their experience goes a long way and a great resource for parents are group leaders. I am neither and still very much found it to be helpful. Simple graphics and diagrams help break up the text as well. Overall Good job to the authors to take something they know so well and explain it from a entry level but still applicable to novice or intermediate adventurers out there.

Good advice for winter camping
Great tips although it does presume you’re in an area with high snowfall.

Readable, informative, comprehensive and practical
It covers essentially everything you need to know for winter hiking and camping - wear, gear, food, drink, first aid, trip planning, etc. Though it apparently targets beginners, it is a pleasant and informative read for experienced hikers. I did quite some winter hiking summiting many peaks in New England before this book was published. Reading this book still expanded my knowledge. The authors are avid hikers as well as leaders for youth hiking and camping. The content of this book is from their own experience making this book very readable, relevant and practical.Like many other outdoor educational literature, this book provides very conservative instructions that even people with limited fitness and no experience can follow to minimize risks. The most important factor of safety - physical condition - is not discussed at all.Overall, it is a very well written book.

Best suited for warmer winter locations.
Great introduction book for camping in the snow. I showed this to professional outdoor search and rescue people, and they said some of these ideas simply will not work in Northern snow conditions. The book is suited for warmer, near freezing climates. Do not turn to this book for surviving in Canada's Central and North areas. (The pictures show people not exhaling steam! Its above freezing!) However, its a good reference book in general, easy to read.
