VFAN GPS Module Antenna - Quick Setup, Accurate Lock, But Watch the Battery

This GPS module worked right out of the box on my older Windows 10 machine. It was immediately recognized, a COM port was allocated, and data started flowing. Using VisualGPSView, I got a reading, and even in my steel building (with the door open), it was able to acquire a lock on 6 to 10 satellites within a minute. I was impressed with its performance. One thing to note: there's a watch battery welded to the surface, likely for timekeeping. This means it has a limited shelf life unless you're comfortable with some soldering. Just something to keep in mind. Overall, I recommend it.

Missing Drivers, Support Website Gone, Waste of Time

After about 4 hours of trying various things, I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. The Support Website is non-existent (the website doesn't load), it doesn't identify in Windows, it wasn't coming in on my Raspberry Pi, and there's nowhere to turn to for assistance. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

Versatile little GPS module

I’m fairly new to GPS modules, so I thought I’d try this out. What caught my eye is that you can easily connect this to a 3.3V microcontroller like the ESP32 or Raspberry Pi Pico (or Arduino if you use a 5V to 3.3V logic level shifter), or though at USB connection straight to a PC. I love that this module comes with all three connectors you could possibly need – a USB cable, and two TTL cables with either male or female dupont connectors on the other end. It just makes connecting it easy, no matter what your setup is.To test the module, I connected via USB connection to a PC, and ran u-center, as suggested on this sellers Amazon page. I was able to connect to u-center fairly easily, and I didn’t need to update the drivers or anything (like with some other GPS modules). It took a moment to connect, so I’m not sure why – like 20 seconds to see it on the serial port. I followed a generic u-center tutorial I found online, and was able to successfully poll this device for various GPS messages. For this quick test I was indoors, so I wasn’t getting a great GPS signal, so it took a bit of time to find my coordinates. However, once it did, not only did u-connect plot my location, but I entered the coordinates into a common online map service, and they were spot on! I blurred out my location on the screenshots, but you can get the idea of what u-connect shows. So I was able to verify that this device works, and can connect to u-center as advertised. I can’t wait to play with it more. 5 stars for being actually easy to connect, and able to receive a fairly weak indoor signal!
