Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern

The cream of the crop.
This book, like most model ship building books, is very old. The forth printing of the first edition was dated 1968. But there is a wealth of information here. I tend to go into a hobby, and purchase everything I can read about it at one time. I bought half a dozen books on model ship building... all but one are very old books. But the info on how to craft ships is interesting, and applies to building the full size versions as well. If you are a beginning model ship builder, this book will set you on the right path. If all the model ship books I have, this one is the cream of the crop.

Overview and special nuggets
As a ship model beginner, I was impressed how Roth made simple explanations that other books have made very complicated. Other books assume some knowledge of maritime jargon, but Roth explains everything. But more important to me were the little nuggets he intersperses - plans for various jigs to make things like proportional dividers, waterline markers and plank clamps; sources of plans and reference materials; basics of adhesives and finishes. This you'll not find in other books I've read. The only problem: many of the sources cited here no longer exist - they have not been updated since the book was first published in 1988.

Great book
Very helpful book full of illustrations in black & white. A book truly to be added to your bookshelf for model period shipbuilding. There are only a few pages in full color, but the drawings and information fall outweigh that. Also full of tips and tricks of the trade. Again, great book and especially when purchased at a great price.

Shipbuilding
Shipbuilding from Stem to SternThis book has a wealth of information about the ships but reads more like an encyclopedia than a how-to book. It is full of references to buying items and books about details. I will keep it for a source of manufacturers and reference books. If you are looking for “how to” information, look somewhere else

A Great read
I am beginnig to learn about model ship building. I have bought several books on modeling and wooden ships. It seemed that the more I read, the less I learned, UNTIL I purchased this book. I gives more details, more information, and more additional resources than anything I have found thusfar. This is a MUST READ for any beginng plank on frame or plank on bulkhead shipbuilder. It also is simply a Great read. It is likened unto a novel.Thank you Milton Roth!!!!

Great Starter Information.
Great book if you're looking to get into wooden model ship building. I knew nothing about the process before reading this and while it doesn't contain ALL the answers, (no book does,) it provided me with the basics I needed to think through constructing my first wooden ship model.
