The Kingdom of Back

I love historical fantasy cross overs. There's something other-worldly about historical places sometimes, and when they're blended well with fantasy elements, they can be wonderful. This definitely delivers.Nannerl is a piano prodigy with a talent that is soon overlooked when her father discovers her younger brother is just as talented. Who will ever remember her, a girl, when she can't even compose? Her brother can do anything he wishes and despite their closeness, resentment grows in Nannerl. When she meets a fairy creature named Hyacinth, he offers her a deal: he'll help her be remembered if she helps him reclaim his lost throne in the Kingdom of Back. As Nannerl outwits witches, ogres and slays river guardians in his world, her world becomes increasingly complicated. She must choose which one offers her what she truly wants: immortality.This was a very quick read which is a testament to how well it's written. I particularly loved the passage of time and how it was handled by Marie Lu. She started with an eight-year-old girl and ended with a young woman. There are some fabulously vivid passages as well--particularly the part where Nannerl performs for the Emperor and Empress. The narrative is o beautifully woven. Gorgeous read :)

This is the first book I have read by marie Lu, I've heard she's an amazing author and I do have her others on my shelf waiting. I treated myself to this one purely for the gorgeous cover. How beautiful is that!?When I started reading it I must admit it wasn't what I expected at all. But I carried on and before I knew it. I was hooked. It's a mix between historical fiction and fantasy and it works perfectly. Two completely different worlds. The story focuses on music (piano) by Nannerl and Wolfgang Mozart. Nannerl wishes she won't she be forgotton and her wish will soon be granted via helping another in a fantasy world herself and her brother created, but everything is not as it seems and she may have got it all wrong.The story includes the highs and lows of both the siblings. The tasks Nannerl has to complete for her wish to come true but it soon turns dark and twisted. Nannerl has to fix it all before her wish costs her the most important thing (her brother). Brilliant written, imaginative, original. Perfect. I seriously loved it. Highly recommend. A well deserved four stars from me.

Will her wish be fulfilled?I loved this story, it was the perfect start for this year. This book did justice to the theme (you need to read it to find out what exactly I am talking about, those who have read might understand. 🤭). This book is musical in it's writing and the world-building is brilliant.My only regret is that the ending is not what I expected and I wanted more but I guess that was the whole point. I recommend this book to all the lovers of music you are in for a treat with this one.

Marie Lu é uma das minhas autoras favoritas, então eu já esperava muito desse livro, mas confesso que ainda assim estava um pouco apreensiva. The Kingdom of Back é bem diferente dos outros livros que ela já escreveu, mais pela parte de ficção histórica, então não tinha como eu imaginar o que ela faria com essa temática nova, essa mistura de realidade, de um mundo antigo com um imaginado e a incerteza constante sobre ser ou não algo real.Essa talvez seja a minha parte favorita do livro, nunca saber ao certo se tudo aconteceu ou se foi algo que Nannerl e Woferl imaginaram só. Acho, afinal, que a verdadeira mágica do livro está aí, nessa mistura, nesses sonhos deles, no jeito que eles criam o mundo e ainda precisam o desbravar depois.O enredo não é muito movimentado, mas tem um pouco de aventura de vez em quando, o que o deixa bem interessante. Não é um livro perfeito, mas ele entrega bem o que se propõe, e eu só tenho algumas poucas ressalvas a comentar.A primeira delas é sobre as regras do reino mágico em relação ao real. Acho que precisava ficar um pouco mais claro por que a protagonista precisava estar em tal lugar do mundo em tal dia para ir para um lugar mágico como o reino. Minha segunda ressalva é só para como me senti lendo. Como tudo era novo, mágico e inesperado, eu acabei não conseguindo entender as regras do que era possível, dos limites do reino, o que me impediu de ficar tensa com as cenas mais importantes do livro. Ou seja, não tinha como eu ficar ansiosa ou me surpreender com o clímax quando eu nem sabia direito quais eram as coisas que a Nannerl conseguia ou não fazer. Também acho que algumas cenas, por exemplo Hyacinth na torre (se você leu, vai entender) precisavam ser mais descritas e menos resumidas.Minha última ressalva é que, apesar de eu conseguir imaginar o reino perfeitamente, não consegui imaginar pessoas vivendo nele. Quando a protagonista só conhece umas duas ou três, fica difícil acreditar que é um mundo populado, ainda mais do tamanho que foi dito que era.Mas ainda achei o livro ótimo, amei ver a diferença do tratamento do pai da Nannerl em relação a ela e ao seu irmão, o quanto o mundo era restrito para ela por ser mulher. Aliás, a relação dela com os pais, principalmente com o pai, é uma das mais complexas que já encontrei e acho que a autora não poderia ter desenvolvido e abordado melhor! Recomendo principalmente se você está procurando um livro que se passa no século dezoito e que fala de música e de uma garota que cria e então se vê envolvida nos problemas de um reino mágico. Ou seja, exatamente o que o livro se propõe, ele entrega.
