Q: Which is better ds218+ or ds220+

The ds220+ is the newer version of the same machine and processes actions markedly faster. The extra price is worthwhile for the increase in capability also it will accept the new DSM 7 OS when this is released.

Q: What’s the advantage of the 2 bay model (ds220+) over the 4 bay model (ds420+)..is it just cost? i’m looking to create 8tb -12 tb of storage space

Pretty much yes. It depends what RAID configuration you are going to use, with a 4bay you can use smaller disks (4x) to achieve the same overall size, if you only have 2bays then you need to buy (2x) larger disks so they are more expensive (typically) However you also need to factor on the law of averages with 4 spinning disks is there a higher chance that you will face a disk failure than with just 2 spinning disks. With 4 disks it will be a higher power demand and therefore incur a higher running cost, so over many years that could mitigate the saving. Also the more disks, it will probably run hotter so in the height of summer you might experience overheating problems depending on where the device is sited and its ventilation. If you are going to use it intensely consider changing the stock fan with one with greater thru-put (Noctua) Either way you won't be disappointed they are great devices, I have 3x in operation 24/7 and touchwood only had 1 disk failure in several years.
