Since the box is wood it would have been better to have left it as is
The 5 star rating is for the pieces only. The box itself is covered with adhesive vinyl and has many air bubbles throughout. Since the box is wood it would have been better to have left it as is. I made my own chess board and will use this box to only store the figures. The packaging itself was secure and well padded. The package arrived in great shape.
