True Story about a Lost Boy
Donn Fendler's account of his being lost on Mt. Katahdin in 1939 when he was a child takes your breath away. I kept turning back to the map to trace his steps. His prayers for his parents moved me. I will be giving this book to my eleven-year-old grandson.

A heart stopping, tear jerking, cheer-out-loud inspirational true story
A heart stopping, tear jerking, cheer-out-loud inspirational true story of a 12-year old boy's terrifying experience of being lost on a mountain for nine days in freezing cold conditions. Half naked with only a blanket he found in a deserted cabin to cover himself at nights while sleeping in beds of moss under trees, fighting starvation, unending mosquitos and other biting insects, he never gave up hope of finding help. He prayed every day and night thanking God for whatever berries he could find to eat and asking why it was taking so long to find help. A great story of adventure, survival and never giving up that young and old alike will find deeply inspiring. I bought 6 books to give to my grandchildren to inspire them with the joy of reading. My one 11- year old grandson is now writing a book report on it that, by the way, is required reading for all school children in Maine.

Donn Fendler Reminds Us Of Maine Wilderness.
I love this story. It was never written as a study of the human condition, it's the story of a boy, like 70 years ago, lost in the woods of Maine. And, it's a true story, as Donn Fendler for years visited classrooms and spoke about his experience. I was discussing the book with my siblings, and one brother, who is a history buff, and particularly, a Maine history buff, had never heard the story. That surprised me, as I thought it was a read aloud in every 3rd grade classroom in Maine.Anyway, I have had copies of it in the past, for my classroom, but couldn't find one, so I replaced it, for my siblings to read and pass amongst them. Pretty quick read, just an hour or two, but a great story of a time gone by.

Experiencing being lost is a valuable tool.
This book of only 84 pages is worth the read if you like the stories of survival by providence. A young boy lost is hard to read about.

Lost!
Great story. All children should read this inspirational book. It wouldn't hurt for them to be exposed to a time in our country when parents taught prayer. I am not religious but believe we should all be taught to respect that there is something bigger than ourselves in life and prayer is one way of doing it. I was born in 1938 and can remember how people back then found life very simple and rewarding supporting one another. Perhaps we will have a renaissance with the help of such books. Bless the author for sharing and teaching what real humility and courage can do! Do you think this book would be found in the schools of today? We have come a long way in the wrong direction in our society today, kind of like young Donny!

Good book but probably better for an older child.
I bought this for my eight year old grandson. I was reading from it to him; at first he seemed real interested but a short time later I glanced over and saw his eyes were glued to the t.v. I would suggest that turning off the t.v. before reading to a child is a necessity but this might possibly be a book that would be better for an older child. However, I read it before hand and enjoyed it.The book even through was an older book was in really good shape. It is an amazing story but is better for an older child.

You can learn from the author's mistakes
I read this book when I was about the authors age at the time of the incident, and I enjoyed it, and it is still good reading for a young person. As an adult I found it OK, and I might have felt differently if I were a religious person, with all the references to prayer. But, as I say to religious friends, if it works for you, that's fine with me. That being said, I would recommend the book for the age 10 to 15 reader, and you have to admire the author for the stamina to get through the ordeal, but also wonder what the heck he was thinking about when he left the safety of his experienced companion and guide. It also points out if he had just stopped where he was when he first realized he was off the trail he would likely have been found within 24 hours. There is a take-away for anyone headed into the wilderness.
